Director of Behavioral and Mental Health Services

 

The Center for Elders Independence is a non profit organization serving frail elders in the East Bay. Our innovative, all-inclusive, long-term health care program (PACE Program) provides the frail elderly with all the care they need, allowing them to maximize their health & independence and remain close to their family members and within the community. We currently have an excellent opportunity for a Part-Time Director of Behavioral and Mental Health Services.

 

The Position:  Under the supervision of the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Behavioral and Mental Health Services develops, implements and maintains CEI’s behavioral and mental health program to facilitate effective and appropriate care for participants with behavioral and mental health issues.   The program includes assessments and interventions with participants and their families and support to

staff including assessing training needs of staff, providing individual and group training sessions and making recommendations to the interdisciplinary teams (IDT) on behavioral health care management plans.  The Director of Behavioral and Mental Health Services collaborates closely with the agency’s Directors, Managers, Social Workers and Providers to ensure effective communication and continuity with

service delivery.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Care

1.      Provide clinical supervision of mental health services to participants in consultation with the primary care providers.

2.      Provide initial assessment of mental health needs for new enrollees as appropriate.

3.      Assess participants referred by the IDT and communicate follow up interventions and plans.

4.      Provide routine reassessment every 6 months, or as-needed, for participants with mental health diagnoses.

5.      Provide counseling to participants, participant family members and caregivers.

6.      Conduct individual as well as group counseling sessions.

7.      Collaborate with the primary care staff on appropriate referrals to contract psychiatrists.

8.      Collaborate with the social work staff and interdisciplinary team to formulate and implement behavioral management care plans.

9.      Administer and interpret neuropsychological assessments of participants with cognitive impairments and / or behavioral disorders.

Supervision and Management/Program Development

10.  . Develop recommendations for appropriate behavioral and mental health services and support for participants, families and staff.

11.  Implement and coordinate all behavioral and mental health services for CEI.

12.  Provide clinical and administrative supervision to behavioral and mental health staff.

13.  Establish mental health services in newly opening centers; hire new staff and coordinate services as necessary.

14.  Actively participate in research/publications/grant proposals in the area of mental health.

15.   Present results in behavioral and mental health area at meetings and conferences as appropriate.

Education and Training

16.  Participate on the interdisciplinary team meetings and provide ongoing feedback to teams on behavioral and mental health issues.

17.  Provide educational in-services (individual and group) for staff, families, and caregivers.

18.  Provide specialized counseling and training to staff after a participant sentinel event.

19.  Conduct an annual assessment of program training needs and related issues and develop training plan.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.      Licensed as a clinical psychologist in California, neuron psychologist

      preferred.

2.      PhD or Ed. D in mental health field (psychologist).

3.      At least two years practice experience with geriatric population or in

      long-term care setting.

4.      Excellent skills in verbal and written communication.

5.      Willingness to work within the framework of a PACE interdisciplinary team.

6.      Experience with planning, facilitating and documenting meetings.

7.      Well organized.

 

Ability to work as a team player in a multi-cultural, inter-disciplinary setting.
