East Bay Senior Independent (EBSI), June 2018

About 20 percent of people in the U.S. have an allergy. So don’t let your allergies sideline you this summer! Remember to stay away from allergens that cause your immune system to flare up. Keeping your home clean and dry so it is free of pollen, mold, pet dander and dust mites will help to avoid flare-ups as well.

Some foods high in omega-3 fatty acids contain natural anti-histamines to fight against allergens–like salmon, albacore tuna, herring, mackerel, walnuts, flaxseed oil and canola oil. These foods not only reduce inflammation in your body, but they also keep you healthier. Staying hydrated is also very important. Drinking green tea is especially helpful. Allergy sufferers need extra water to dilute allergens and flush them out.
