“My goal is to ensure each elder feels empowered and finds purpose in their life in a supportive and caring environment.”
As a Center Director, I’m thrilled to lead a wonderful team of providers who work so hard to ensure the needs of each individual senior are valued, respected and prioritized. In my previous roles, I worked closely with CEI as my clients’ developed needs for higher levels of care. I was always so impressed with CEI’s services and their compassionate providers. My goal is to ensure each elder feels empowered and finds purpose in their life in a supportive and caring environment.
After earning my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from San Diego State University, I worked as a psychosocial rehabilitation specialist helping seniors with mental illness and substance use disorders. I witnessed over and over again the resilience of older adults and saw firsthand their strength to overcome huge challenges and struggles. They became a source of inspiration for me and I knew then working with seniors was my passion and purpose in life. I continued my formal education at UC Berkeley completing my Masters of Social Welfare with an emphasis on Community Mental Health, then joining a memory care residential care community as a director of resident and family services.
Immediately before joining Center for Elders’ Independence in 2021, I worked directly with seniors by providing social work consultation and case management services as well as individual therapy and grief counseling sessions at the Jewish Family & Community Services of the East Bay. I speak English and conversational Spanish.
During my time off, I love spending my time with my husband and two dogs plus visiting friends and family in the East Bay. I love to bake cookies, explore farmer’s markets and try new restaurants. For quiet times, reading and listening to podcasts are a top favorite.
“It was during my residency at John Peter Smith Hospital that I realized being a conscientious, caring and communicative geriatrician was my calling. Now I am inspired by each family I meet.”
I am drawn to the PACE healthcare model as I’m passionate about providing healthcare that aligns both my own and my patients’ goals, ethics and values. My grandmother inspired me to consider geriatrics during medical school. It was during my residency at John Peter Smith Hospital that I realized being a conscientious, caring and communicative geriatrician was my calling. Now I am inspired by each family I meet.
Graduating from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, I earned my doctor of medicine in 2009. From there, I began my family medicine residency and geriatric fellowship training at John Peter Smith Hospital located in Fort Worth, Texas. Afterwards, I practiced medicine in a number of settings: home visits, emergency rooms, skilled nursing and assisted living facilities for the past eight years before joining Center for Elders’ Independence in Fall 2020. I am a member of the American Geriatrics Society as well as two other professional associations.
I speak English and conversational Spanish.
I'm also passionate about poetry, music, and cooking as they are essential creative outlets for me. I stay active by running, hiking and during the winter, hitting the slopes with my snowboard with my wife and two daughters.
“I have a deep respect and passion to teach and coach older adults how to maintain their health and well-being while reducing stressors. I’m honored to work directly with seniors.”
I have a deep respect and passion to teach and coach older adults how to maintain their health and well-being while reducing stressors. I am honored to work directly with families of elders with Parkinson’s disease and dementia through movement therapy. By dancing, my patients are maintaining their strength and balance.
When I learned about the greater opportunities for teaching and coaching, I was inspired to become a nurse. As I already had a Bachelor of Arts degree from UC Berkeley, I applied to the Master of Science in Nursing at UC San Francisco. I graduated completing the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner program and obtained my board certification in 2006. Also, I am a member of several professional organizations including the American Geriatric Society and the Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Association and hold a number of other certificates and licenses. After several years as a nurse practitioner for a small doctor’s office, I chose to return to my love for seniors by joining Center for Elders’ Independence in 2007.
I currently volunteer as a board member for both the Suitcase Clinic, which serves the homeless in Berkeley and Brightstar of Marin, which is a home health agency in Marin County.
Wadokai karate is a big passion of mine and I hold a third degree black belt in the martial art. My bicycle is my main form of transportation. I also love to spend time with my mother and close friends. I love being outdoors and appreciate a good garden rock over a diamond any day.
