“I treasure the richness and uniqueness of each participant under my care. As Center Director, I can have a direct impact on positive outcomes for our seniors.”

I joined Center for Elders’ Independence as a social worker in spring 2012 and continue to treasure the richness and uniqueness of each participant under my care. I was thrilled to be promoted to Center Director in 2020 as I can have a more direct impact on the positive outcomes for our seniors.

The PACE healthcare model inspires me to do the best I can to contribute to the bettering our seniors’ lives. I serve as a bridge between the seniors and the social service system. The uniqueness of the PACE model inspires me as it covers every single aspect of their day-to-day life.

Born in Cuba, I earned my Bachelors of Arts degree in Communications from Havana University. I moved to California in the beginning of the 1990s and immediately I found myself working in a variety of settings as an advocate and services manager for homeless youth and families. Inspired by the people I worked with, I decided to earn a Master’s in Social Work at California State University East Bay. After graduation, I worked with HIV positive, homeless youth in San Francisco and eventually moved to working directly with seniors at On Lok for five years as a social worker. While at On Lok, I fell in love with seniors while guiding them in group therapy sessions on spiritually, life purpose and meaning.

When I’m not working at the Center, I take pleasure in spending time at home with family and friends cooking Cuban specialties. I currently live in Berkeley and have my beloved Cuba, in my heart.

“Hearing my patients share, ‘I can do this thing again!’ makes my work with all of the efforts and dedication.”

Hearing my patients share, “I can do this thing again!” makes my work worth all of the efforts and dedication. When I see them become more functional under my care, it strengthens my commitment to this group of amazing people.

When I first see someone, I respectfully listen to their many challenges, whether it’s with their day-to-day living or having to manage numerous medications. We work together with all of the support under our PACE healthcare model to improve health by removing barriers to get much needed services. By seeing my patients once a month, we get better control of medications. They are far less anxious and they struggle much less. It truly is an ideal setting for our beloved seniors.

I earned my Bachelor’s degree from UC Davis, then completed my medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. I did my post-grad residency training at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey at CentraState Medical Center in New Jersey. While there, I solidified my desire with work with older adults under very dedicated geriatrics mentors. Soon after, I moved to Philadelphia to complete my fellowship in Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Health System. I returned home to the Bay Area to be closer to family and raise my children.

In addition to English, I speak conversational Filipino (Tagalog).

When I’m not seeing participants, I enjoy hiking, watching professional and college sports, and spending time with my wife and kids. My children keep me very busy with basketball and soccer.

“I have a deep respect for elders because of the wisdom and life experience they possess. I am in constant awe of their resilience and light they bring to those around them.”

I have a deep respect for elders because of the wisdom and life experience that they possess. I am constantly in awe of their resilience and light that they bring to those around them. I bring that respect and love to my work at Center for Elders’ Independence since joining in 2017. The comprehensive model of PACE addresses access to food, transportation, and psychosocial stressors that traditional primary care does not. I’m proud to be a part of that and excited that I can spend more time to focus on quality care with each senior.

After earning my Bachelor of Science in Human Development at UC Davis, I continued my education at San Francisco State University to obtain both my Master of Science in Nursing and Post Masters Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) Certificate. I am certified as a Medicare provider and Board Certified through American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), in addition to seven other certifications and licenses.

When I am not working at CEI, I volunteer at Berkeley Free Clinic’s Saturday service for sexual/ reproductive health for women, transgender, gender nonconforming and

genderqueer clients. I also volunteer with the Coalition of Concerned Medical Professionals, an all-volunteer organization connecting low-income workers to comprehensive medical care.

I love singing and dancing, and have performed in bands and dance groups around the Bay Area. I also enjoy travel, hiking, days at the beach, and spending time with family.
