
Winter is a wonderful time to relax and get cozy. As we get older, challenges like slippery sidewalks and cold weather and inactivity can impact health and safety more severely.
That’s why taking precautions is essential. Are you ready to enjoy winter without worry? Follow these easy tips to enjoy the season with peace of mind.
1. Stay Warm Indoors
- Dress warmly, even indoors. Wear socks, slippers, and layered clothing.
- Use extra blankets at night and consider wearing a hat to bed.
- Eat well and limit alcohol to retain body heat.
- Share a copy of your home key with a loved one and have them check on you during cold weather. In case of a power outage, consider staying with family or friends.
2. Find Ways to Move when at Home
- Find an exercise or movement class where you can participate from home.
- Call a friend and talk with them while you both walk around the house.
- Consider an ap or device that will help you count your steps.
3. Dress for the Cold when You Go Out
- Wear layers of loose, warm clothing to trap heat.
- Wear waterproof coats or jackets when in the rain.
- Change out of wet clothes as soon as possible.
- Wear good shoes keep your feet warm.
4. Avoid the Risk of Falls
- Check the weather before heading out.
- Use railings for support.
- Wear nonskid, rubber-soled shoes.
- If possible, stay inside during bad weather.
- Consider delivery services for groceries or ask a friend or family member to help get your food.
- Most health plans will deliver medications to your mailbox so you can avoid going to the pharmacy in cold weather.
5. Stay Prepared for Emergencies
- Keep blankets and/or extra winter clothes in your car.
- Let someone know your plans before going out.
- Always carry a charged mobile phone.
