Spring is the season of renewal. As we move into longer days and warmer weather, healthy lifestyle changes can have a restorative impact on both physical and emotional well-being. Increased sunlight, fresh air, and more opportunities to move and connect with others can help boost energy, improve mood, and even support better sleep. Here’s how older adults can make small, intentional shifts this spring season.
Boost Your Mood
Spring’s increased daylight and outdoor time can have a measurable effect on mood. Studies found that people who spend at least 30 minutes a day outdoors report lower levels of stress and depressive symptoms. Social interaction in outdoor settings, such as group walks, gardening, or community events, can also reduce feelings of loneliness and help older adults stay connected and engaged.
Soak Up the Sun
Basking in the sun is more than just a relaxing activity, it’s also essential for your health. Exposure to natural sunlight helps your body produce vitamin D, which supports bone strength and immune function. Research suggests that up to 50% of adults over 65 are vitamin D deficient, increasing the risk of fractures and decreased immunity. Spending even 10-15 minutes in the sun daily can help boost vitamin D levels and support overall health. Regular exposure to sunlight and fresh air also helps regulate your body’s internal clock, making it easier to feel alert during the day and sleep more consistently at night. However, there can be too much of a good thing. When enjoying the sun, make sure to do it safely and in moderation––wear sunscreen and avoid peak UV ray hours to avoid risk of skin damage.
Move More, Feel Better
Warmer temperatures and longer daylight hours make it easier to stay active. Studies show that older adults who engage in at least 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity (as prescribed by a doctor), experience improved strength, balance, and energy, which can help maintain independence and mobility. Whether it’s a simple activity like walking in your neighborhood or participating in group exercises and classes, moving your body can make a significant difference in overall health.
